Primary and secondary school students in the Czech Republic are enjoying a one-day holiday today, followed by a long Easter weekend. They will not return to school until Tuesday, April 11th. The next school holiday will be the summer break.

Throughout the Easter holidays, there are various festive events taking place across the country, including exhibitions, concerts, fairs, and markets. Unfortunately, the weather suggests that it will be mostly cloudy to overcast with daily highs around ten degrees Celsius. Showers are expected and maybe even snow in the mountains.

  • The Easter markets will be open until April 16, with the exception of the one at Anděl, which closes on April 9. The market at Old Town Square has a live music program.
  • People have a last chance to visit the fun fair Matějská pouť, which ends on April 10. It is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on holidays and weekends.
  • The National Technical Museum operates the historical carousel at Letná, which runs Friday to Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • The Botanical Gardens at Troja are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., but the Fata Morgana greenhouse is closed on Mondays. An exhibition of butterflies just opened in the greenhouse.
  • Prague Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On weekends and holidays, all zoo entrances are open until 5:30 p.m.

Czech police remind those who are traveling over the Easter holidays that this is considered one of the riskiest times of year on the road. Tragically, there are usually more accidents on this weekend than on other weekends, often due to alcohol consumption.

More Easter activities for families

To ensure road safety, traffic police organize a traffic safety event every year during this time. Note that this year police officers will focus on busy places and main thoroughfares during inspections, as well as patrol tourist areas and other risky places where road traffic rules are often violated and accidents occur. They will also check whether drivers have consumed alcohol before driving.
