10 Celebrity Misadventures in Prague

Things did not go well for the heiress on her Prague vacation. As if being mercilessly hounded by local paparazzi wasn’t bad enough, poor Paris fell smack bang on her face and badly injured her chin while fleeing. Ouch. Then came the ultimate humiliation: Paris’s then-beau Benji Madden stepped over his sweetheart while she lay on the ground. After such a traumatic experience, is it any wonder Ms Hilton was overheard declaring, “Prague! Never again!”?

Bill Murray

Hollywood legend and all-round nice guy Bill Murray paid a fleeting visit to Prague while in Berlin promoting his latest film, The Monuments Men. Instead of spending the evening hanging out with co-stars George Clooney and Matt Damon, Murray hopped on a train to the Czech capital where he was taken on an impromptu midnight walking tour by the US Embassy’s cultural attaché, Sherry Keneston-Hall. “The whole thing was a little surreal,” Sherry told The Telegraph. Perhaps – but we’re still pea-green with envy of Ms Keneston-Hall’s Lost in Translation moment. Ever the professional, Bill made it back to Berlin for his scheduled 9am press conference the next day.

Matt Damon

Trying to kick the demon nicotine? Prague might not be the best place to quit as Matt Damon discovered while filming The Brothers Grimm. “I gave up smoking for four months but I’m smoking again. Everybody smokes here.” Damon certainly managed to take in the sights while in town claiming to have walked across Charles Bridge at least two or three hundred times. Surely wading through those crowds repeatedly must be bad for your health — and your sanity?

John Malkovich

While the incident might have been embarrassing for the local authorities, it didn’t stop John returning to Prague to tread the boards once more in 2013 – this time as serial seducer Casanova in The Giacomo Variations. Czech tabloid Blesk snapped the actor strolling around Prague’s historic center and praised him for wandering the streets without an array of bodyguards. “He’s not afraid of us!” the headline exclaimed. Like an A-list boomerang, Malkovich was back again in 2014, when Blesk broke the earthshattering news that he’d treated himself to Bo-la-lot (Saignon style grilled beef) at popular expat haunt SaSaZu and like many a tourist before him, indulged in a Thai massage.

Brangelina

When Brad Pitt came to Prague in 2007 to keep Angelina Jolie company while she did a spot of filming, the couple escaped the glare of the paparazzi by living in a covered villa at Bubenec – one determined photographer apparently scaled the wall to get his money shot. Brad couldn’t resist bitching about how the locals just wouldn’t let him lead a normal life – unlike in his beloved New Orleans. 

Angelina wasn’t much taken with the Golden City either, reportedly locking herself in the bathroom and shouting: “This a horrible country! I’m never coming back here again. I don’t care if it costs me a billion dollars, I’m not going to stay here another hour. Even Africa wasn’t this bad.”

According to The Daily Mail, Angelina Jolie would point a bony finger out of the window of her car to identify children which happened to be exactly the right shade to join the ever expanding Brandgelina brood. Surely this tale is too awful to be true?

Kim Kardashian and Kanye

With its picturesque cobbled lanes and fairytale vistas, Prague remains a perennially romantic setting. It’s no surprise then that some celebrity visitors start to feel a little frisky when in town. Tabloid favorites Kim Kardashian and Kanye were snapped frenching while at a friend’s wedding—enough with the PDA already people!

Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg paid the Czech capital a visit in 2013 when he also indulged in the obligatory stroll across Charles Bridge. Although there’s no evidence to suggest he did so hundreds of times, we bet he posted a selfie or two on his timeline with Prague Castle in the background.

If media reports are to be believed, the Die Hard star fell head over heels for the Czech capital while filming World War Two drama Hart’s War in 2001 and was keen to buy a historic property near Prague Castle. He is also alleged to have fallen hard for the country’s women including Czech beauty pageant queen Eva Jasanovska. As for the rumours that he had a string of “local talent” sent up to his hotel room while staying at the Four Seasons, we couldn’t possibly comment.

Thanks to the influx of stag-dos since the Velvet Revolution, Prague residents are used to inebriated Brits making a show of themselves on a Saturday night in the Old Town. It isn’t so often, however, that you spot a bone-fide British rock legend passed out on the cobblestones after having a few too many. Paul Weller, English singer-songwriter known as the Modfather frontman of The Jam, decided to gatecrash a birthday party at popular student hangout Velryba, where he proceeded to hijack the proceedings by drunkenly belting out a couple of tunes. Barely able to stand, Weller staggered out into the street and duly collapsed in a heap with his girlfriend. How very rock n’roll. 

Olivia Munn

Olivia was fooling around on an indoor swing when her attempts to fly high ended with her falling off and dislocating her shoulder. At least she can laugh about it – and so can we, as the moment was captured on film by a friend and then shared via good old Twitter.
