Unwind with English-friendly film
Early in the week, a series of Czech film classics (and a Czech Lion nominated film) will appear at Prague independent cinemas with English subtitles. Diamonds of the Night (Démanty noci), from 1963 is a Ponrepo on Feb. 18, see One Hand Can’t Clap (Jedna ruka netleská), 2003, is at Kino Aero on Feb. 19 as part of the "Some Like it Czech" series with an English-friendly Q&A. Just in time for the Masopust season, the Czech-Lion-nominated Our Lovely Pig Slaughter (Mord) screens at Kino Světozor on Feb. 19.
Celebrate Mother Language Day with a Czech 'linguaphile'
Feb. 21 is Mother Language Day, making it the perfect time to dive into a new book with Czech ties. Linguaphile: A Life of Language Love by Czech-born Julie Sedivy is part memoir, part scientific exploration, and a full on lyrical journey through the power of language—how it shapes our thoughts, relationships, and identities. With a background in psycholinguistics and a life steeped in multiple languages, Sedivy weaves together personal anecdotes and academic insights, showing that language is more than words—it’s memory, emotion, and even a way of navigating the world.
March for Ukraine
A rally, Together for Ukraine, will take place in Prague’s Old Town Square on Feb. 23, featuring speeches from Czech President Petr Pavel and others. Organized by Million Moments for Democracy, People in Need, and more, the event promotes unity and support for Ukraine. A memorial march by Hlas Ukrajiny will follow at 4 p.m., honoring victims of Russian aggression. A protest concert outside the Russian Embassy in Prague will feature performances by both Czech and Ukrainian artists on Monday, Feb. 24 to mark three years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Spend a day at the fair
The St. Matthew’s Pilgrimage, dating back to 1595, has evolved into an annual fun fair at Prague’s Výstaviště since 1963. Today, it boasts over 100 attractions, including the iconic Cyclone roller coaster, which is returning to the city after a seven-year break. A fixture at fairgrounds since 1975, the ride was removed in 2018 due to urban revitalization plans. After extensive renovations, the Cyclone will thrill fairgoers again when the fair opens from Feb. 22 to April 15. Here are 10 things to know before you go.
