This winter, more people in Czechia have decided to spend their winter break closer to home. Residents are choosing domestic destinations over international getaways, fueled by a mix of affordability, accessibility, and an appreciation for the country’s winter offerings.

More people opting to travel around Czechia

According to the CzechTourism agency, this winter around half of all people plan to spend their holidays within the country—an increase from last year. The Liberec and Hradec Králové regions are particularly popular, offering a mix of skiing, cross-country trails, and tranquil hiking paths. The Krkonoše and Šumava areas currently have the most accommodation reservations.

CzechTourism director František Reismüller highlights the proximity and accessibility of Czech mountains as key advantages. “Our slopes may not be extreme, but they are perfect for families and active relaxation,” he says. Additionally, the recent modernization of mountain resorts—totaling CZK 1.75 billion in investments—has enhanced the overall experience with new cable cars, efficient snowmaking systems, and floating ski pass pricing.

Interestingly, more people are willing to spend more on their winter vacations this year, with average expenses rising to CZK 8,342 per person. The majority of this budget goes toward accommodations (48 percent) and dining (19 percent). Despite these increases, domestic ski resorts remain competitively priced, with many maintaining or even lowering ski pass prices.

Looking beyond borders

While domestic travel dominates, 22 percent of Czechs plan to venture abroad for their winter holidays (or have already done so)—a significant rise from 14 percent last year.

Apart from the ever-popular neighboring Slovakia, which offers the Tatra Mountains, Austria, Italy, and Hungary remain top choices, offering a blend of skiing and wellness experiences, Martina Blahová, CEO of the Travel Family agency, tells Czech media outlet iDnes. Destinations like the Dolomites in northern Italy are particularly popular.

Emerging destinations such as Turkey, Bulgaria, and even North America are also attracting more visitors. However, these trips require careful planning, with most travelers booking their holidays months in advance.

Around seven in 10 people take a week-long vacation. Only 6 percent opt for a longer trip, while 22 percent prefer a weekend getaway.

Practical tips for your winter getaway

  • Book early: Stats show that most Czechs plan their trips one to three months in advance. Secure your accommodations and ski passes early to avoid disappointment.
  • Explore new destinations: If you’re a regular visitor to Czech mountains, consider exploring emerging hotspots like Bulgaria for a—cheaper—mix of winter sports and relaxation.
  • Leverage floating pricing: Many Czech resorts now offer floating prices for ski passes, allowing you to save money by booking in advance or during less busy periods.
  • Hunt bargains: You can get generous deals and packages on voucher websites such as Slevomat.
  • Check conditions: If snow is important to your holiday, be sure to plan ahead by checking very useful sites such as Snow.cz and Ceskehory.cz to see conditions and snowfall across all mountainous areas.
