The National Heritage Institute of the Czech Republic has recently announced a list of the castles and chateaus participating in its Hradozámecký Advent—good news for anyone who appreciates a Yuletide tour of festively decorated historic chambers or a stroll around a snowy English garden.
More than a hundred castles under the management of the NHI are open to the public during the pre-Christmas, Christmas, and New Year season and will be hosting concerts, exhibitions, craft fairs, and other holiday activities during this time period.
Some notable events include a competition for the best gingerbread at Nové Hrady, concerts at Stiassni villa in Brno, and a rare night tour of the ornately decorated Nechanice Castle, a 19th-century Tudor Gothic style Romantic château near Hradec Králové.
Referred to as “Little Hluboká” because it resembles Hluboka Chateau in southern Bohemia, Hrádek u Nechanic invites visitors to tour an exhibition on Christmas traditions and enjoy English Christmas punch and biscuits from the public castle kitchen.
Several films have been shot here including a 1972 Czechoslovak miniseries production of the Charlotte Brontë novel Jane Eyre.
A number of events are already underway, night tours of the castle take place December 1 & 8. For a complete list of dates, times, and events, see the NHI website.
