Czech culture this week: See short films by young Prague filmmakers

Plus: Manifesto Anděl celebrates Ukrainian Independence Day with a special program, alternative rockers Pixies come to Forum Karlín, and much more.

VISIT

Mimikry with works by contemporary painter Martina Salajky, opens up at Villa Pelle on Aug. 23 and runs to Oct. 2. The paintings show unsettling juxtapositions in a surreal natural setting.

Painter Barbora Valášková presents new work in Blau in HYB 4 Gallery D in the Hybernská Campus. the artist explored the various meanings and sues of the color blue. The opening is Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. and the show runs until Sept. 15.

The 83rd exhibition of exotic birds is at the Charles University Botanical Gardens until Aug. 28. Note that this is the Botanical Garden in Prague 2 on Na Slupi Street and not the one in Troja.

WATCH

A recording of the London stage production of Frankenstein features Benedict Cumberbatch as the monster and Jonny Lee Miller as Viktor Frankenstein and was directed by Danny Boyle. This entry in the NT Live series is at Bio Oko on Aug 22.

The Romanian film R.M.N.explores the relationship of a man who returns from Germany and his ex-lover in the winter of 2019. It will be shown with English subtitles and followed by a discussion at Edison Filmhub on Aug. 24.

See works of five young filmmakers at FAMU at the Cinema 03. the works are in different genres including animation and documentary, and have English subtitles. They are at both kino Světozor on Aug. 25 and 26 and kino Aero on Aug. 25.

Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film Moulin Rouge! is at CAMP on Aug. 23. The musical, set in Paris at the turn of the last century, stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

Quentin Tarantino's action film Kill Bill is at Cross Club's summer cinema on Aug. 24.

The original Top Gun starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer soars into the summer cinema at Biotop Radotín on Aug. 24.

PERFORMANCE

The 19th edition of the new circus festival Letní Letná runs to Aug. 31 at circus tents in Letná park. Many but not all of the events have no language barrier. Headline acts this year come from Sweden, Spain, France, New Zealand, the U.S., and Finland. There is also a side program dedicated to children.

Velvet Comedy in addition to its usual shows has Comedy Open Mic at Containall in Reigrovy Sady on Aug. 25.

Savor

Not everyone has a sweet tooth. Sour ales are at Festival kyseláčů at Pragovka on Aug. 24. Several different types of beer, all on the not-so-sweet side, will be featured.

The midweek wine festival Mladí vinaři v Praze takes place at Bar Gabriel in Smíchov on Aug. 24. You can expect to choose from 30 types of wine from a group of winemakers who consider themselves the next generation.

Have some comedy with your food and drink at Stand-up Comedy Night at Manifesto Anděl on Aug. 23. This week's MC is Brian Lennon.

Celebrate

Celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day at Manifesto Anděl on Aug. 24. there will be food special, workshops, and music.

Charity

Bring clothes you no longer need to Daruj co neunosíš, to Budova Filadelfie at Brumlovka on Aug. 22 to 28. They will be sold on Sept. 12 at Žofín Restaurant by Stones.

Listen

From Chicago, muti-instrumentalist Isaiah Collier and his band The Chosen Few earned high praise for their 2021 album "Cosmic Transitions." They transport themselves into Jazz Dock on Aug. 22.

Czech instrumental group Point of Few combines electronics with contemporary jazz. Their debut album is "Open to closeness." They will be at Kasárna Karlín on Aug. 23.

Synth-pop musician Laser Viking and producer badfocus are at Kasárna Karlín on Aug. 24 as part of the summer concert series.

Local favorite Tonya Graves, a.k.a. the Bohemian Songbird, sings for two nights at Jazz Dock on Aug. 24 and 25.

The alternative rock band the Pixies come to Forum Karlín on Aug. 25. The current lineup includes founding members Black Francis, David Lovering, and Joey Santiago.

Czech rock star David Koller will be at Ledárny Open Air on Aug. 25. Koller was a member of the band Lucie. He previously was in Blue Effect and was a touring member of Chinaski. He is also one of the owners of Meetfactory. He called for sanctions against Russia, similar to the ones we have now, back in 2014 following the invasion of Crimea.

Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton takes the Tour to End All Tours to O2 Arena on Aug. 25. Sabaton has a new album called "The War to End All Wars."

A concert for 100 metronomes is at Galerie Rudolfinum on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. It is presented as part of the Jiří Příhoda: Void exbibition, which closes on Aug. 28. Admission is free.

Family

It's not a typical dog show. DogFest is an opportunity for the entire family including their dogs to meet and have fun. There are workshops, a fashion show, some competitions, a dog disco, and more. It's at Výstaviště on Aug. 26 and 27.
