Czech culture this week: Summer music fests and Latin American flavors

Nick Cave, Beck, and Underworld will play Prague's Metronome festival, while Merkádo brings a taste of Latin America to Vinohrady.

VISIT Art installations across the city

The Landscape Festival starts June 21 with lectures and then on June 22 at Krenovka on Příběnická Street there is an opening performance. The festival itself consists of installations across the city until Oct. 2.

The 1928 silent film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" has been reworked by patients from a hospital in Australia during seminars with an artist. The result is an installation called Javier Téllez: La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, at Meetfactory from June 22 to Sept. 11.

Watch An animated view of the Anne Frank story followed by a talk

The animated film Where Is Anne Frank transports the famous diarist to modern times. It is screened in English with Czech subtitles, followed by a discussion, at Edison Film Hub on June 20. Most other screenings of this film in Prague are dubbed in Czech.

As a preview of the upcoming Noir Film Festival in August, you can see the classic 1948 film Force of Evil at kino Lucerna on June 22. The plot involves organized crime, gambling, and tough choices.

Have a Blind Date at Bio Oko on June 22. The title of the film has not been disclosed, but it will be English-friendly. And there is nothing to lose, as you pay what you want after the film is over.

Performance Two festivals, two takes on modern theater

The Arena festival, at Smíchovská náplavka from June 21 to July 2, fills the waterfront with theater, new circus, music, and contemporary performing art. The project is overseen by the Forman Brothers and also includes international acts.

The Laterna Fest presents an international festival of multimedia and multi-genre theater from June 21 to 26 at the New Stage of the National Theatre.  There are visiting acts from France, Belgium, and Hungary plus exhibitions and workshops.

The site-specific dance performance Additional Feel: Mad City by Romeo & Hellion takes place at the National Gallery's Veletržní palác on June 22. The work presents the author's dystopian vision of a city filled with mad people.

Irena Dousková's novel B. Proudew looks at life after the Prague Spring in a Czech town from the point of view of a young girl. She faces typical issues of school bullies, clueless teachers, annoying brothers, and untrustworthy adults but manages to rise above it all. A play adaptation of the book will be performed in English at Prague's Divadlo D21 on June 24 and 25 by the Brno-based amateur group Czech Theater.

savor Central and South American flavor

The ninth edition of Merkádo brings Latin American food and culture to náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad on June 23 to 25. Steaks and wine from Argentina are among the highlights.

Celebrate Five years of events at Kasárna Karlín and a solstice alignment

If you stand at the Old Town tower of Charles Bridge on the evening of the summer solstice (June 21 this year), the sun sets over the altar of St. Vitus' Cathedral. The celestial alignment is apparently the brainchild of Emperor Charles IV and architect Petr Parléř.

Kasárna Karlín celebrates five years as a cultural hub with four days of music, theater, and film from June 22 to 25.

Several French scientists and thinkers will speak in English at Sounds of Science 2022. There will also be musical interludes and the screening of the silent film "The Crazy Ray." The event is at Národní dům na Vinohradech on June 23.

LISTEN Metronome festival and classical concert under the stars

British hard rockers Iron Maiden bring their Legacy of the Beast tour to Sinobo Stadium (Eden) on June 20. The tour focuses on the band's history and hits, especially from the 1980s.

Garage rock band the Dandy Warhols is back after five years with a show at Meetfactory on June 20. They had a big hit with "Bohemian Like You" in 2001, but also have 11 albums of material to choose from.

A free open-air concert of film music and popular favorites is played by the Czech Philharmonic in front of Prague Castle at Hradčanské náměstí on June 22 at 8:15 pm.  

The one-day Prague Rocks festival is headlined by Metallica with support from Five Finger Death Punch, Red Fang, and Steel Panther. It all goes down at Letiště Letňany on June 22 from 1 pm.

Norwegian pop star Aurora shines at Forum Karlín on June 22. Her song “Runaway” has been streamed 100 million times on Spotify.

The Metronome Festival runs from June 23 to 25 at Výstaviště. The headliners are Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Beck, and Underworld. (Note that Beck and Jeff Beck are different; Jeff Beck is not appearing at this festival but has his own concert on July 11)
