Czech Republic coronavirus updates, August 11: 140 new cases, Greece tightens entry for Czechs

There were 140 new COVID-19 cases reported in the Czech Republic on Monday, according to the latest figures posted by the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

The daily increase in COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic yesterday was the lowest it has been on a weekday in nearly a month, since 128 new cases were reported on Friday, July 17. Significantly fewer tests are conducted over the weekends, leading to fewer reported cases.

To date, 18,494 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Czech Republic since the beginning of the outbreak in March.

There have been 389 COVID-19-related deaths and 13,017 recoveries in that span, leaving 5,088 known active cases in the country.

The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Czech Republic has remained consistently low, however. There are currently 106 COVID-19 patients being treated in Czech hospitals, with about 18 of those patients considered to be in serious condition.

While the country’s first map, released August 3, identified nine areas of low risk, the latest map shows just two: Prague and Frýdek-Místek. These two areas have the lowest level of warning (out of three green-yellow-red levels), while the other 74 districts across the Czech Republic carry no warning.

While still two of the country’s areas with the highest incidence of COVID-19 cases, the number of cases in Prague and Frýdek-Místek has been on the decline over the past week, at about 22 new cases and 61 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days, respectively.

Meanwhile, there has been an minor uptick in cases in areas of South Bohemia in recent days. Klatovy has reported about 36 new cases per 100,000 residents during the past week; that number is about 22 new cases per 100,000 residents in Prachatice and 21 new cases per 100,000 residents in Příbram.

From this week, the City of Prague has re-established a COVID-19 infoline for its residents. The number 227 272 065 can be called daily from 8:00 – 18:00, and can handle about 500 calls per day.

From August 17, Czech residents traveling to the country will need to submit a negative COVID-19 test no older than 72 hours before entry.

Along with Croatia, Greece has been one of the most popular summer holiday destinations for Czech travelers this summer.

Worldwide, there have now been more than 20 million confirmed COVID-19 cases; the United States has reported more than a quarter of those cases, over five million.
