Czech Republic coronavirus updates, July 21: 153 new cases as virus once again spreads quickly

The situation continues to worsen in the Moravia-Silesia Region

There were 153 new COVID-19 cases reported in the Czech Republic on Monday, according to the latest data released by the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

The rise in new coronavirus cases on Monday marks the first time the country has exceeded more than 14,000 new cases since the start of the epidemic.

Out of the over 14,000 infected, 8,836 have recovered and 359 have died. Right now, 137 COVID-19 patients are in hospital, including 18 in serious condition.

Many of those cases originate in one of the worst regions affected, the Moravia-Silesia Region, where the situation has continued to worsen. The public health authority (KHS) in the Moravia-Silesia Region announced that the COVID-19 virus is now spreading outside of the known clusters, including at an elderly home in Havirov (Luna and Helios) and the Bohumin hospital, among others. Thirty new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, according to KHS.

The Karvina district had the highest number of new cases: 14. The region has been the center of an outbreak after several workers in coal mines operated by the OKD company became infected.

Authorities are testing people in contact with those who tested positive for coronavirus in the Luna and Helios elderly homes in Havirov. In addition, KHS said, several infections sprouted up in connection with the Varroc Lighting System firm, seated in the Novy Jicin district. Four people working at the CSM North Mine in the Karvina district also tested positive. A total of 768 and 355 people have tested positive in each of the two mines.

There are several other regions with clusters of coronavirus cases, including the neighboring Frydek-Mistek region, the Mělník region north of Prague, Vlčnov in the Uherské Hradiště region, the Kutna Hora region in central Bohemia, and Jihlava in the Vysocina Region.

In the Uherské Hradiště region, local health officials have reported 19 cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days. Authorities have extended hygiene measures in the town of Vlčnov, where you must now wear mouth and nose protection when riding public transit and when going indoors.

The biggest cluster of COVID-19 cases in Bohemia lies in the Melnik region, where there are 21 cases per 100,000 people. The Jablonec nad Nisou region in North Bohemia has 20 cases per 100,000 people.
