Czech Republic coronavirus updates, July 8: 119 new cases Tuesday, mostly in Moravia-Silesia

The Czech Republic reported 119 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, according to the latest figures posted by the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

The new cases are predominantly from the Moravia-Silesia region, where localized outbreaks continue to rise in the Karviná and Frýdek-Místek. There were 77 new cases in the Moravia-Silesia region alone yesterday, while the numbers throughout the rest of the country continue to be more or less stable – save for the Kutná Hora district, which has seen a rise in new cases over the past two days.

In Prague, the number of new COVID-19 cases has held at four per 100,000 residents over the past seven days.

In Karviná, that number is now 168 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days (36 total yesterday), the highest in the country but on the downswing after blanket testing among OKD employees ended last week. In neighboring Frýdek-Místek, however, the number of new cases continues to rise, and is now over 30 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week (23 cases in total yesterday).

According to information obtained by ČTK, a new outbreak has occurred among employees of the DEVA company in Frýdek-Místek; the company manufactures protective clothing, including face masks.

Kutná Hora, meanwhile, has now reported 34 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past week.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in mid-March, there have now been a total of 12,685 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic.

There have been 7,910 reported recoveries and 351 COVID-19-related deaths over that span, leaving a total of 4,424 known active COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic as of this morning.

The vast majority of those cases are not considered serious, and most of the cases uncovered during the blanket testing in Karviná were completely asymptomatic. A total of 133 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated in Czech hospitals.

The United States reported a record number of COVID-19 cases yesterday, crossing 60,000 new daily cases for the first time. The country also confirmed it would be leaving the World Health Organization in July, 2021.

Europe has been the continent most affected by coronavirus, however, as the COVID-19-related death toll across European countries exceeded 200,000 yesterday.
