Czech Republic coronavirus updates, September 2: 503 new cases, the largest rise to date

The Czech Republic reported 503 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the highest total to date, according to the latest update posted by the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

Tuesday’s total marks the first time the country has surpassed 500 new cases since August 21, when labs reported 502 new cases. It’s a big jump from Monday’s 257 new cases and Sunday’s 136 new cases. On Monday, officials performed 7,876 tests.

Since the start of the coronavirus crisis in the Czech Republic six months ago, there have been 25,117 total COVID-19 cases, 18,116 confirmed recoveries, and 425 deaths.

There are currently 166 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Czech Republic, with more than 30 in serious condition. Those numbers have risen by about 50 percent since the beginning of August.

The most-affected region in the country is now Hodonín in South Moravia, where about 61 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents have been reported over the past seven days.

In Prague, there have been 46 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days. There were a record 142 confirmed cases in Prague yesterday, according to iDnes; so far, 5,252 people have been infected in the capital.

Mělník (43), Beroun (33), Třebíč (45), and Prague-East (34) have also reported more than 30 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week.

A total of 28 players and employees of the Pilsen hockey club tested positive for COVID-19. One test has not come back yet with results. On its website, the club revealed the recent news and said they have been in contact with the regional hygiene station to determine next steps.

In South Bohemia, hygienists have put the teaching staff from three primary and one secondary schools into quarantine, according to the director of the South Bohemian Regional Hygiene Station, Kvetoslava Kotrbová. The schools are in Bavorov and Záboří in the Strakonice region and in Bechyně in the Tábor region, as well as a secondary school of trade, services and crafts in Tábor.

Hungary has closed its borders to most travelers this month. However, Czech residents who previously booked a stay in Hungary will still be able to enter the country if they provide a negative COVID-19 test no older than five days.
