What are the world’s most prosperous countries?

Released yesterday, the Legatum Institute’s annual Prosperity Index assesses the world’s countries based on their citizens’ wealth and well-being, aiming to dig deeper than GDP and give a better view of a nation’s true wealth.

Countries are ranked by a variety of factors including Economic Quality, Business Environment, Governance, Personal Freedom, Social Capital, Safety and Security, Education, Health, and Natural Environment.

The Index bills itself as an “authoritative measure of human progress, offering a unique insight into how prosperity is forming and changing across the world.”

Scandinavian countries dominated the top of the list, with Norway coming in at #1 for the second straight year (and eight out of the last nine, only bested by New Zealand in 2016) and Finland (#3), Denmark (#5) and Sweden (#6) not far behind.

The UK was ranked #7, while the USA came in at #18.

And the Czech Republic cracks the world’s top 30 countries by prosperity coming in at #27, which is actually one position lower than in 2017.

That’s good enough for third among Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, coming in behind Slovenia at #17 and Estonia at #26, who swapped positions with the Czech Republic in this year’s Prosperity Index.
