Czech Republic reports 53 new COVID-19 cases Monday; death toll reaches 283

Prague, May 12 (CTK) – The Czech Health Ministry has not confirmed previous information about no COVID-19-related fatalities on Monday; instead, it has reported that one died person died yesterday, while the coronavirus death toll now totals 283 in the Czech Republic, according to data released on the ministry’s website this morning.

On Monday, Czech laboratories confirmed 53 new COVID-19 infection cases, and one more was registered this morning, so their total number has reached 8,177, while 4,711 have recovered.

The first fatality in the country was recorded on March 22.

Laboratories performed a total of 7,537 coronavirus tests on Monday, which is twice more than on the holidays, resulting in an infection rate of 0.7 percent among those tested.

The daily rise in the number of coronavirus cases over the past 11 days has been under 80.

The highest coronavirus incidence is still in the capital of Prague, with 1,847 cases, followed by Moravia-Silesia with over 1,140 cases.

If counted per population, the worst situation is in the Karlovy Vary Region with almost 146 infected per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the Prague and the Olomouc regions. The best situation is in South Bohemia, with about 28 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.

During the past long weekend, ten people infected with COVID-19 died in Czech hospitals; four on Friday and three on Saturday and Sunday each.

Prague has the highest number of COVID-19-related deaths, 93, while 44 have died in Moravia-Silesia. The lowest death toll, just one fatality, is in the Zlin Region.

The number of the hospitalized with COVID-19 has been dropping and since May 4. This morning, 236 were hospitalized, 44 of whom in a serious condition.

Among those infected, people aged from 45 to 54 years have the highest ratio (813 women and 680 men). Nine in ten people were infected within the Czech Republic, the rest abroad, mainly in Austria and Italy.

Most fatalities have been senior citizens over 65 years (252). The youngest victims were in the age group from 25 to 34.

The first three coronavirus cases were registered in the Czech Republic on March 1.
