Czech Republic reports 99 COVID-19 fatalities, 233 recoveries

Prague, April 8 (CTK) – The number of COVID-19 fatalities rose to 99 in the Czech Republic today as nine new deaths were reported since the morning, while the number of recovered rose by 52 to 233, according to the data from the Health Ministry’s website.

A crushing majority of the patients with COVID-19 who died were seniors over 60.

The Institute of Health Information and Statistics (UZIS) says seniors make up 24 percent of the infected and their share is not considerably rising.

Today, 204 new infection cases were registered, which is slightly more than on Tuesday (195). The total coronavirus incidence in the Czech Republic rose to 5,221 confirmed cases.

The record high daily number of coronavirus tests, 7,434, was on Tuesday, their total number approaching 100,000. The figures for today are not known yet.

Health Minister Adam Vojtech (for ANO) said today that the uncontrolled spread of the COVID-19 disease had been successfully halted in Czechia and the country can start preparing for its return to normal life. He estimated the number of COVID-19 patients at some 10,600 by the end of April. A week ago, this figure was still put at 14,200.

The highest number of the COVID-19 cases is n Prague, 1,274, a quarter of the total number. Prague has almost 94 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the Olomouc Region, central Moravia, with 75 cases per 100,000 and 477 in total. The lowest incidence is in South Bohemia, 20 per 100,000.

As far as the age is concerned, the highest share of the COVID-19 patients, one-fifth, is aged from 45 to 54 years. The elderly over 65, who are considered the most threatened group, make up almost one-fifth as well. Only 5 percent of the infected are children under 14.

On Tuesday, 432 COVID-19 patients were in Czech hospitals, 24 more than on Monday, while 103 of them were in severe condition. About one-third of the hospitalised coronavirus patients have recovered or have been released to home quarantine at least. The data on the new hospitalised patients for today will be available on Thursday morning.
