Czech Republic reports lowest daily percentage of new coronavirus cases since March 4

Prague, April 23 (CTK) – The number of the COVID-19 recoveries has exceeded 2,000 in the Czech Republic, the death toll is 210 and the total number of the confirmed coronavirus cases has recorded 7,136, according to the data released on the Health Ministry’s website this morning.

The number of the recovered has risen by 13 to 2,002 since Wednesday night. Two new deaths of COVID-19 patients have been registered and the total number of coronavirus cases has risen by four today so far.

On Wednesday, the so far highest daily number of coronavirus tests, 8,807, was performed. The share of the positive cases in them was 1.12 percent, the lowest figure since March 4.

The share of new positive cases per the number of tests was over 2 percent both on Sunday and Monday, while on Tuesday, it dropped to 1.6 percent. On Wednesday, 99 new infections were registered and on Tuesday 133.

A total of 195,725 coronavirus tests have been performed in the Czech Republic to date, including the repeated ones in the same person.

Institute of Health Information and Statistics (UZIS) director Ladislav Dušek told a press conference today that the UZIS model expected some 7,800 COVID-19 cases in Czechia at the end of April, while its previous predictions mentioned 10,000 cases.

Dušek said the epidemic had been halted and a controlled return to the normal life may begin.

He also noted that the Easter holidays had not affected the rise in the COVID-19 incidence in Czechia and would not likely be reflected in the later numbers. Epidemiologists were waiting for the number of the coronavirus cases following the Easter when many people had not observed the rules restricting gathering in public and wearing face masks.

So far, some 3 percent of patients with COVID-19 have died in the country. Most of them died of other diseases, but tested positive for COVID-19, Dušek said. Almost nine in ten fatalities were people over 65, the Health Ministry data shows.

Out of the 14 regions, the highest coronavirus incidence has long been in Prague with 1,666 confirmed coronavirus cases now. Prague has also the highest number of COVID-19 patients per population, over 122 per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the Olomouc Region, central Moravia, with almost 105 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest incidence is in South Bohemia, under 26 per 100,000.

The number of deaths of COVID-19 patients is the highest in Prague, too, 77. Moravia-Silesia and Central Bohemia follow with 25 and 20 deaths, respectively. The Zlín Region, south Moravia, has the lowest number of fatalities, only one.

The number of the hospitalized coronavirus patients has slightly dropped. On Wednesday, there were 401 of them, including 76 in a serious condition, whose number has declined too.

A total of 517 patients have been released from hospitals so far, either as fully recovered or to home quarantine.

The first three cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Czechia on March 1, the first patient died on March 22.
