Czech Team Wins World Cup of Carp Fishing

More than 100 teams of carp fishermen from countries around the globe gathered this past weekend at the Nové Mlýny reservoirs in South Moravia for the World Carp Classic, the premiere event in the world of carp fishing.

Two dozen local teams from the Czech Republic competed for top honors, along with challengers from the UK, Netherlands, Poland, France, and other countries around Europe.

For the competition, teams comprised of three individuals sought to fish the biggest carp they could find out of the reservoir, measured in kilograms. The team with the three biggest catches would take home the World Carp Classic gold.

While a traditional Christmas carp in the Czech Republic only reaches about three kilos, the fisherman routinely pulled out catches that weighed over six times that size.

The heaviest single haul came from a Polish team, who landed a 21.6kg behemoth.

But the three biggest catches – 20.1kg, 19.9kg, and 18.6 beasts weighing in at a total of 58.6kg – were snared by a local team comprised of Karel Nikl, Jan Dadák, and Jakub Erhart Kumšta, giving the Czech Republic the gold in the 2016 Carp Classic.

This was the second World Carp Classic win for sponsor Carp ‘R’ Us, who previously took home the title in 2014.

The Polish team with the top overall catch came in second, while a Dutch quartet took home the bronze. Two other Czech teams followed to round out the top five.
