The town of Žatec in the Czech Republic is anxiously awaiting a decision from the UNESCO committee next week that could see it added to the prestigious World Heritage List. Žatec and its surrounding hop-growing landscape have been nominated in recognition of the region's unique role in the history of hop cultivation.

Jaroslav Špička, director of the Temple of Hops and Beer in Žatec, told the Czech Press Agency the idea first came from local heritage group Chmelobrana which wanted to preserve historic hop warehouses.

In 2007, Žatec and its hop heritage sites were added to the Czech Republic's tentative list, starting a long process of documentation. The UNESCO committee returned the initial nomination asking for more focus on the entire story of hops, from cultivation to processing.

Now, Žatec mayor Radim Laibl says they are "confident it will turn out well after the years we have sacrificed."

However, Laibl admits there are concerns over readiness for an influx of beer tourism. Improvements have already been made like a new bus parking lot near the Temple of Hops. Žatec is also working to expand services for visitors by supporting business repairs and offering workshops on projects connected to potential inscription.

According to Olga Bukovičová, who will represent the Czech Republic at the Sept. 17 decision meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Žatec is uniquely situated within a cultural landscape shaped by hops.

The UNESCO-recognized items of Czech cultural heritage include the Slovácký verbuňk dance, masopust (carnival) masks and processions, Czech falconry traditions, Moravia's Ride of Kings festival, Czech puppetry, Czech blueprint folk patterns, and handmade glass bead decorations for Christmas trees.

Local residents now see benefits from preparation for increased attention, like reopened restaurants.

With its architectural heritage and role in hop history, Žatec hopes UNESCO recognition will bring new opportunities while celebrating an important local industry.
