Tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams had never lost a doubles match in their Olympic history, taking home gold medals at London in 2012, Beijing in 2008, and Sydney in 2000.
But that all changed yesterday in Rio, when the Williams sisters suffered a shocking upset at the hands of Czech doubles team Barbora Strýcová and Lucie Šafářová.
Hours after the Williams sisters were topped by the Czech team, #1 ranked Novak Djokovic also suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, who had spent forty minutes stuck inside an Olympic Village elevator earlier in the day.
In female singles action, Czech star Petra Kvitová cruised past Hungary’s Tímea Babos 6-1, 6-2 earlier in the day.
