Daily rise in Czech COVID-19 cases under 100 cases for third straight day, 6,141 total

Prague, April 15 (CTK) – The Czech Republic has 6,151 confirmed coronavirus cases, while 163 COVID-19 patients have died and 676 recovered so far, according to the updated data on the Health Ministry’s website from this morning.

The number of the recovered from COVID-19 has risen by 34 since Tuesday night.

The daily rise in the positive cases has considerably slowed down in the past three days, being under 100.

While on Saturday, 170 new cases were registered, on Sunday, it was 89, on Monday, 68 and on Tuesday, 82. However, the number of the coronavirus tests was dropping during Easter, too, from some 4,800 on Saturday to about 3,200 on Sunday and Monday each. But on Tuesday it rose again, reaching 5,867.

Laboratories in Czechia have performed 137,409 coronavirus tests to date, including repeated ones in the same person. The record number of tests was last Wednesday, almost 8,200.

The share of the new COVID-19 cases in the total number of the tested persons in a day has been decreasing since Saturday when it was 3.5 percent, while on Sunday, it dropped to 2.7 percent, on Monday, it was 2.1 percent and on Tuesday, 1.4 percent.

Out of the Czech regions, the highest coronavirus incidence is still in Prague, 1,461 cases. Prague has also the highest number of COVID-19 patients per population, with 107 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by the Olomouc Region with 93 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Besides, Prague has the highest number of the coronavirus-related fatalities, 68.

Most of the COVID-19 patients who died were over 75 years, those aged from 75 to 84 make up about one-third and people over 85 another third. No death of patients under 25 with COVID-19 has been reported so far.

The highest share of the infected, about one-fifth, is among people over 65, who are also the group most threatened with COVID-19. A similar share of the infected are in the age group between 45 and 54 years.

The number of COVID-19 patients in Czech hospitals has been around 430 in the past days. On Tuesday, 84 had a severe course of the illness demanding intensive care. Some 330 of the hospitalised patients have recovered or have been released to home quarantine so far.

The first COVID-19 infection cases were reported in the Czech Republic on March 1. Their number exceeded 3,300 at the end of March.

Deputy Health Minister Roman Prymula said on Tuesday that the latest data on the number of the infected in the Czech Republic showed that the infection was under control and thus some anti-coronavirus restrictions could be softened. However, the government would freeze their easing if the COVID-19 incidence started steeply rising, he said, adding that he would consider 400 new cases a day such a steep rise.

Nevertheless, this cannot be the only criterion, but the number of COVID-19 patients who need intensive care and mechanical ventilators must also be taken into consideration, he admitted.
