Kampa Villa to Offer New Picnic Service, Old-Fashioned Czech Pastries

Patisserie IF Café, opening in Prague’s historic Werich Villa and specializing in traditional Czech treats, will launch a new picnic service in Kampa this summer

The famous Werich Villa at the entrance to Prague’s Kampa Island was vacant for years following the floods that ravaged the Czech capital in 2002.

The historical building dates to the 17th century when it was used as a tannery; after that it was occupied by a number of eminent Prague denizens, including Czech actor Jan Werich who lived there from the 1940s until he died in 1980.

In 2015, custody of the building was granted to the Jan and Meda Mládek Foundation; it will become a museum and arts center, honoring the late great actor and his comedy partner, Jiří Voskovec.

The foundation is currently seeking theater and music projects to be showcased at the villa later this year.

This week it was reported by iDnes that the venue will also open a café which will reproduce pastries from the Werich era including Prague cake, an egg-creme-filled brioche, and Werich rolls.

Another item of interest mentioned in the article is the café’s picnic service which will allow guests to simply order a picnic online, reserving a basket filled with light bites and a blanket for a specific pick-up time.

The café will be part of the IF Café franchise owned by Iveta Fabešová.

Ms. Fabešová, who is known for her elegant confectionery creations, has pattiserie locations on Tylově náměstí and Belgická Street, and will open another location on Jungmannova this summer.

The Wericha Villa café is also scheduled to open in June.
