The Czech capital has much to offer practitioners of yoga from Bikram to Hatha and, in the summer months, free classes taking place at a park near you.

Previously, however, anyone who longed to combine a meditative stretching session with tossing back a cold one has been out of luck—until now.

Charles Du, also known as Yoga Charles, is a Chinese-American yoga teacher and trainer who is bringing the increasingly popular worldwide trend of beer yoga to the world capital of beer, Prague.

“Beer Yoga is the marriage of two great loves—beer and yoga. Both are centuries-old therapies for body, mind, and soul,” says Du.

We recently spoke with Du who told us that he thinks Prague is the perfect place for this style of yoga given the local beer culture.

Just how does this foamy form of the ancient therapy work?

“We start with a meditation to calm the mind, then move onto asana practice, finally ending in a peaceful guided relaxation laying down. Sequences will include sips of beer.”

Beer yoga has already made a splash in London where a recent BBC news segment captured students not only drinking ice cold beer during their yoga session but balancing a bottle atop the head as well as using it in a variety of poses.

Isn’t consuming alcohol while exercising contrary to the spirit of yoga we asked Du?

“Anything that you do that brings you closer to self-awareness is encouraged by yoga. When people are drinking beer they are gaining awareness of that taste and you are becoming better aware of your body. Doing it with a community is also an important part of the yoga experience.”

In a test class yesterday, Du says a mix of Czechs and expats turned out. He is expecting a large interest in tomorrow’s event.

Finally, we asked Du the all important question: which kind of Czech pivo will he serve during his yoga class? Svijany, apparently, is the yogi’s beer of choice.

Yoga Charles’s beer yoga lesson takes place July 28 at 6:30pm in the garden of the K10 co-working villa. No prior yoga experience is needed—the class is 150 CZK and the price includes a free beer.

Classes will continue weekly through the end of August.
