From May 2020, the Czech Republic will get another direct connection to the USA, Václav Havel Airport revealed earlier today via social media.

Prague will get a new direct flight to Chicago operated by American Airlines beginning next year, following an increasing trend with direct connections from Prague to the states during the summer months.

The new route will run from May 8 to October 24, with five flights per week. It’s estimated to service nearly 50,000 passengers next year.

Tickets will be available for purchase on the new route from August 12.

“Chicago is one of the top 5 destinations across North America with a strong local market in terms of overall potential in the US,” Prague Airport Chairman Václav Řehoř told local media.

“Chicago Airport is one of the main transfer points and will offer passengers a number of other connecting flights.”

Historically, Chicago is also one of the US cities with the largest population of Czech immigrants; 1930s Mayor Anton Cermak was born in Kladno.

Flying the Prague-Chicago route for American Airlines will be a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which Václav Havel Airport touts as one of the most modern of contemporary aircrafts.

The new direct flight between Prague and Chicago will boost the number of direct flights between Václav Havel Airport and US to four. Current direct flights include routes between Prague and New York (Delta), Newark (United), and Philadelphia (American).

Delta had also previously operated a direct flight between Prague and Atlanta, but ended that service about five years ago. A new agreement between Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson and Prague’s Václav Havel Airport, however, hopes to re-introduce that route in the near future.

Last year, Prague Airport promised new direct routes to US locations like Chicago and Los Angeles, and increased flights to New York. With today’s announcement, the Airport is already making good on their promise.

A direct flight from Prague to Bangkok, in addition to other Asian routes, was also supposed to come to fruition by the end of 2019, but no word yet on that service.
