2008 Fringe Festival Praha
A Studio Rubín
Malostranské naměstí 9
Malá Strana, Praha 1
25 May – 1 June
Beautiful Confusion Productions returns to Prague for its fourth Fringe Festival with H+A SCREENPLAY, a multi-media performance based on a poem by Anne Carson. The historical facts of Abelard and Heloise´s relationship are fascinating: he a brilliant scholar, she his beautiful and gifted pupil. The rest of their story is the stuff of legend: the inevitable baby (named Astrolabe, after a recent scientific invention), the secret marriage, and the attack on Abelard that sent them both into religious orders, where they wrote the love letters that would make them famous. Complete with tough questions about the intersection of intellect and passion, bouncing balls and lots of fresh watermelon, H+A SCREENPLAY invites the audience to follow legendary lovers Heloise and Abelard on a multimedia journey from 12th century France to the present, with a quick side-trip to Hell along the way.
Directed by Melanie Rada and Dinah Geiger, H&A SCREENPLAY features Becka McFadden and Adam Stewart.
Hailed by BLATT as “provocative, fun, intellectual and challenging,” Beautiful Confusion Productions is dedicated to producing actor-driven theatre in an international context. Beautiful Confusion was founded by Becka McFadden in Philadelphia in 2004 and has performed at Villanova Theatre, Playground @ The Adrienne (Philadelphia), Poezie & Provokace (Prague) and Club Lavka (Prague). Beautiful Confusion´s previous Prague Fringe productions include the dreamer examines his pillow in 2005 (co-produced with Theatre Exile), the “superbly staged” (Prague Post) Savage/Love in 2006, and last year´s Necropolis, hailed as “necessary viewing” and “Top Ten of Fringe” (Prague Post).
Becka McFadden (Heloise) is the artistic director and co-founder of Beautiful Confusion Productions. Becka has appeared in Beautiful Confusion´s productions of Savage/Love, Sure Thing and the dreamer examines his pillow and directed last year´s Necropolis. Currently based in London, she holds an M.A. in Theatre from Villanova University and has worked in Philadelphia with Villanova Theatre, Theatre Exile, Black Starr Collaborative and Philly Young Playwrights.
Adam Stewart (Abelard) received a BA in Theatre Arts & Education from Bretton Hall University in Leeds. His UK theatre credits include three seasons with the National Youth Music Theatre, performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Rose Blanche at the National Theatre, London. He has previously performed in the Czech Republic with a tour of Hair: The Musical. Since 2001, Adam has worked extensively in theatre, television, and more recently, as a freelance drama practioner and educator in New York and throughout the U.K. He currently teaches drama at the English International School, Prague.
Dinah Geiger (Co-Director) is happy to be back at Prague Fringe, after performing in Beautiful Confusion´s SAVAGE/LOVE and last year´s The Exception & The Rule (Rock in Show Productions). Dinah founded & performed with her own dance theatre company in Switzerland, before an injury ended her dancing career and she chose to pursue acting full time. A graduate of The Actor´s Studio Master´s program in New York, Dinah has been based in Prague since 2006, where she has worked extensively in film and television, performing in French, English and German.
Melanie Rada (Director & Set-Designer) is a member of Prague-based Divadlo Miloco, where she has worked as an actor, designer, and director, most recently as light and sound designer for Macbeth. Other recent credits include running workshops and directing a one-act play for the Prague Post Playwriting Competition, which she also stage-managed.
