Is This the Best Hummus in Prague?

Hummus is no longer a stranger to the Prague culinary scene, with varieties at kebab shops and Middle Eastern restaurants to go along with take-home finds at international markets like Marks and Spencer (which boasts a tasty and impressive selection) joined by budget alternatives at major supermarkets like Lidl and Albert.

Well, billed as “the best hummus and pita bread in the Czech Republic,” PitaChléb.cz aren’t mincing their words. And after sampling their wares ourselves, we’re inclined to agree.

A relative newcomer to the Prague culinary scene, PitaChléb.cz was founded by Israeli-Czech couple Saar and Jitka Rat just a few years back, but they’ve already made quite a name for themselves.

Handmade using authentic Israeli recipes, PitaChléb.cz serve up exclusively hummus and pita bread, but their focus has become a hit with local Prague restaurants and retailers including the Farah Food Halal market, Nofech Pâtisserie in Vršovice, and Olive Mediterranean bistro.

PitaChléb.cz is based in Jirny, but you can catch them in Prague at the Czech capital’s frequent farmers’ markets during the warmer months.

Look out for them at the Pankrác farmers’ market on Wednesdays, the Jiřího z Poděbrad market on Thursdays, the Anděl market on some Fridays, and the Náplávka market on Saturdays, but expect long lines of customers waiting to get some of the best pita and hummus in Prague.

We stumbled across PitaChléb.cz at the Jiřího z Poděbrad market recently, and a quick sample immediately convinced us of the quality we were dealing with. The pita is lighter & fluffier than local alternatives, and the buttery-smooth hummus was a real winner.

If you can’t make it out to Prague’s farmers’ markets during the day, or Prague’s farmers’ markets are no longer operating due to cold weather, you can also order from PitaChléb.cz online. An e-shop offers free delivery for orders over 500 CZK, and hummus and pita can be purchased in individually-portioned sizes and in bulk.

Four pieces of pita bread run 59 CZK, while 50 pieces can be yours for 650 CZK. The hummus is available in 125g (49 CZK), 400g (149 CZK), and 1000g (349 CZK) sizes.
