Beloved Czech singer Karel Gott, who passed away in October, was the Czech Republic’s most-searched term over the past year according to Google Trends, which released their global “Year in Search” data earlier this week.
Gott wasn’t the only famous Czech in the top 10. The year 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Jan Palach, who committed a protest suicide in 1969 and was the Czech Republic’s 9th most-searched term this year.
The Million Moments Anti-Babiš protests were among the most-searched for events, Billie Eilish was the top foreign celebrity, and ‘how to make a whip’ was the #1 how-to question researched, which might sound… a little strange for those not familiar with Czech Easter traditions.
Eggs Benedict has become a trendy breakfast dish in Prague, but that popularity knows no bounds: it was the most-searched food item on Google in the Czech Republic last year.
And a bountiful year for mushrooming in the Czech Republic was also reflected in the country’s search terms, with a pair of mushrooms – one edible and one poisonous – showing up among the top food items, along with the query ‘how to freeze mushrooms’.
Cricket, perhaps surprisingly, was responsible for some of Google’s most-searched terms globally, with an India vs. South Africa match taking the #1 spot. The South American football championship Copa América was #3.
Other top global trends, including the release of the iPhone 11, the burning of the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the films Joker and Avengers: Endgame, were also reflected in local Czech results.
These were the Czech Republic’s most-Googled search terms in 2019, broken down by category:
