Farmers' markets reopen

Farmers' markets in Prague reopen in March, starting with Markets on Kulaťák at Vítězné náměst on March 1, offering local and international food, flowers, and live music. Other markets include Malostranské náměstí, Tylovo náměstí, Rašínovo nábřeží, Jiřího z Poděbrad, and Karlínské náměstí. Heřmaňák markets on Řezáčovo náměstí also open March 1, with organic produce and pet treats. Karlín markets start March 7.

Better job market access for Taiwan

Czechia will simplify the process for Taiwanese nationals to work in the country by allowing them to enter the labor market without needing work permits or employment cards. Environment Minister Petr Hladík announced that the regulation is expected to take effect at the beginning of March.

School's out

Several children in Czechia will have their spring break holidays this month, depending on where they go to school. For example, pupils who go to schools in Kladno (near Prague), Ústí nad Labem, Mladá Boleslav, or Olomouc will have their week-long break between March 3 and March 9 or March 10 and March 16.

Public transport disruption

Due to the reconstruction of a water supply system in the Náměstí Míru area, the Náměstí Míru stop for line number 135 will be temporarily relocated from Monday, March 3 (from the start of daily operation) until further notice—around late May, authorities say. Check the official site of the Prague Public Transit Company for more information.

Masopust, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday

Celebrations for Masopust, the traditional Czech festival celebrating the end of winter, will be held in early March, in line with Shrove Tuesday on March 4 and Ash Wednesday the day after. On March 1, Prague will host several vibrant Masopust celebrations. The Loretánská Street parade, right by Prague Castle, winds through historic streets and features live music and traditional Czech food. The Žižkov Carnival, celebrating its 30th anniversary, begins in Radost Park on March 1, featuring a masked procession, horse-drawn carriages, and free food—pancakes, of course—and drinks along the route.

International Women's Day

International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8 (a Saturday this year), initially honored working women in socialist and communist nations. It is now universally observed to acknowledge progress and, in some places, protest existing gender inequality. Several events will take place across Prague, such as Prague Feminist Tours offering a walk through the city, where participants visit and discuss feminist monuments, street names, and memorials, culminating in a collaborative workshop to envision a more inclusive city.

Last chance to withdraw bank deposits

Clients of the failed Sberbank CZ have until March 10 to claim insured deposit compensation. Following the bank's liquidity crisis in February-March 2022, the Czech National Bank facilitated payouts through Komerční banka branches. Compensation can be collected in person, by a designated representative, or via mail. Inheritance-related claims may extend the deadline if rightful recipients are undetermined.

Ukrainian temporary protection deadline

Ukrainians with temporary protection until March 31, 2025, can extend it for another year until March 31, 2026. The process involves two steps: first, online registration via the Information Portal for Foreigners (available from early 2025 until March 15), and second, an in-person visit to the Department of Asylum and Migration Policy to receive a new visa sticker. During registration, applicants must schedule an appointment for their visit.

Clocks spring forward

In Czechia, daylight saving time (DST) begins in the early hours of Sunday, March 30, at 2 a.m. local time. Clocks will move forward one hour to 3 a.m., meaning one hour less of sleep but longer daylight in the evening.

Paper tax return deadline

If you're self-employed and own a trade license, March is the last month in which you can fill out your 2024 paper tax return. The deadline for this is April 1, 2025.
