In 2015, British retailer Marks & Spencer made a big turnaround in the Czech Republic, posting a year of profit after four straight in the red.

A big part of that has been the expansion of specialized food sections since first being rolled out at the Wenceslas Square location a few years back.

Despite being confined to a small percentage of the retail space at most M&S stores in the Czech Republic, at locations like Nový Smíchov, food & beverage now outsells clothing.

And now, the retailer plans to bring food-only supermarkets to the Czech Republic, according to a recent interview with Czech marketing manager Zdeněk Hašek in Hospodářské noviny’s Marketing & Media publication.

“Our priority now is to open Simply Food Stores by M&S, i.e. specialized food stores,” Hašek said.

“Currently, we are searching for suitable locations.”

In the UK, the company’s food & beverage typically outsells clothing in a 60-40 ratio. With the addition of Simply Food stores in the local market, the company looks to bring that trend to the Czech Republic.
