Czech Republic coronavirus updates, May 27: no deaths, 48 new cases, border re-openings

There were 48 new COVID-19 cases reported in the Czech Republic on Monday according to the latest figures provided by the Czech Health Ministry, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 9,050.

Tuesday’s rise follows 47 new cases reported on Monday. The number of tests conducted will be updated by the Czech Health Ministry later this morning.

On Monday, the ratio of new cases versus tests conducted fell to .66% after a high of 1.81% on Sunday; Tuesday’s figures are likely to follow suit.

For the past eight days, the daily increase in new cases has been under 80. That figure was routinely 200-300 at the height of the outbreak in late March and early April.

No COVID-19-related deaths were reported on Tuesday as of this morning; if that number holds, it will have been one of just three days without a death since March 22.

Czech Institute of Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS) director Ladislav Dušek estimated yesterday that in 60% of the reported deaths, COVID-19 was not the primary cause; he suggested that heart disease, respiratory diseases, and diabetes were primary causes of death in the majority of cases.

Across the Czech Republic, the capital city of Prague has reported the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 2,054, a ratio of 158 per 100,000 inhabitants. The South Bohemian region has reported the lowest share, with 181 total cases and 28 cases per 100,000 people.

Prague has reported 98 deaths related to COVID-19, which is also the highest number in the country; the Zlín Region has registered just two COVID-19-related deaths.
