Meet Fringeon: 2017 Fringe Festival Shows Announced

The sixteenth annual outing of the Prague Fringe Festival promises passion, politics, punchlines...and a pigeon!

Taking place from May 26–June 3 2017, the 16th annual Prague Fringe offers over 230 performances across seven Malá Strana venues nestled between the landmarks of the Prague Castle and Charles Bridge.

Some of the world’s top theatre makers will appear in the Czech capital during those nine days, a period that is highly anticipated by Prague theatre lovers who are hungry for the fest’s English-langauge and no-language-barrier shows.

This year’s stand-outs, says festival founder and director Steve Gove, include:

“British comedy writer and director Henry Naylor’s multi-award-winning show Angel, a one-off reading from Fringe guru Jim Haynes’ new book, and fresh out of drama school, the exceptional Tooth+Nail with their new show Hummingbird which took Edinburgh and Australia by storm.”

Fringe is also tackling some thought-provoking issues this year with many shows in the programme focussing on the turbulent political landscape of recent years.

Protest, Hess, Domestic, Age of Consequence, Bang, No More Miss America and two shows by British comedian Sajeela Kershi: Immigrant Diaries and Paradise Beneath Her Feet, all explore different political aspects of contemporary society.

NOVELTY: Escape game - The Clinic

An escape game offering gaming experience in the form of a dystopian atmosphere, futuristic environments and interactive puzzles and effects that draw you into the action.

There’s also a burgeoning Nordic season in store for fans of the Scandinavian vibe, supported by the Swedish and Norwegian Embassies.

The innovative Teater Slava are returning to Prague for the third time with two productions: Kontra Alt and What If… (a children’s show in a purpose-built dome). Norwegian Viggo Venn (one half of comedy duo Zach & Viggo) is also back after successful sell-out tour of the Australian festival circuit.

This year sees the introduction of a newly-launched Family Fringe showcase event, a free, hour-long preview of the various kids shows on offer, held at La Loca Bar & Lounge (at Mosaic House) on Saturday May 27 from 3pm, as well as the annual Fringe Sunday marketplace on Sunday May 28 from 2:30pm, also free entry.

The new visual identity of the festival was created by local designer and artist Alina Shupikova who took on the task of re-inventing the festival’s image and creating the new Fringe mascot – Fringeon.
