As the final days of 2020 come to an end it is time to think about getting that new highway toll sticker (vignette) for the coming year. The difference is, this year motorists will be able to buy it in electronic form.

Beginning in December, drivers can buy the new electronic toll sticker (highway pass) for 2021. Since it is digital, motorists can keep their current physical sticker for the full length of its validity and set the start date of the new one up to 90 days in advance. The new pass can be purchased at edalnice.cz

“The difference between the classic toll sticker and the electronic version is not only in the how they are purchased, but that it will no longer have to be stuck on a car window and then scraped off. The one-year pass will be valid for 365 days and will be available for purchase during the year,” said Mr. Karel Havlíček, minister of transport.

The online sale of the new electronic highway pass for 2021 will begin in the 1st of December 2020. Motorists can expect to pay the same price as last year, CZK 1,500 for one-year pass, CZK 440 for one-month and CZK 310 for 10 days. The new system will also make it easier to make large purchases for corporate fleets.

The same as this year, vehicles powered by electricity, hydrogen or in combination with another fuel (CO2 emissions up to 50 g/km) will be exempt from the highway fee. The same exemption applies to persons who have a disability card.

Drivers of electric vehicles without a special EL license plate must register online. The registration form can be sent in electronic form (via data mailbox or with a verified electronic signature) or in paper form with a verified signature via post or delivered personally to the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.

The fee for vehicles powered by natural gas or bio methane is lower. The one-year fee is CZK 750, the one-month fee is CZK 220 and the 10 days fee is CZK 155.

The first toll stickers were used in the Czech Republic 25 years ago, in 1995. At that time, the toll applied to 570 kilometers out of 651 kilometers of motorway and motorway-road network. The new electronic pass will be valid for 1,024 kilometers of tolled highways.
