New Summer Cinema to Open this Week In Prague

Prague’s lengthy summer cinema seasons runs from June through September with opportunities to catch feature films and cult classics beneath the stars growing each year. Those listed here are new and notable; see this article from our archives for a more comprehensive rundown of the Prague letní kino scene.

Karlín Barracks

We covered the planned transformation of these former barracks in Karlín earlier this spring. We’re pleased to see that the project has taken off and will be offering its inaugural season of events with an opening on party on Friday (June 23) and the debut of its summer cinema Saturday (June 24). The first film? Mel Gibson buddy-flick Lethal Weapon. Admission is 70 CZK; showtime is at 21:30.

Summer Cinema at Výstaviště

Launched back in May, there’s still plenty of time to take advantage of this unique outdoor cinema, organized by arthouse favorites Bio Oko, Aero, and Světozor, and taking place on the premises of the historic Prague exhibition grounds. Showtimes, ticket purchase, and line-up can be seen here, Patrons are required to wear headphones to block out sound in this central location. Among this week’s English-friendly films: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Pragovka Art Summer – Kolben Open

If you haven’t made it to the Pragovka art space in Vysočany, an industrial ruin that once housed production of Praga cars during the First Republic and is now home to 40 open art studios, summer is the perfect time to visit. Debuting its summer cinema this season—films are shown on 16mm via vintage projector—organizers will be screening Antonioni’s The Cry on June 22 as part of a Films by Wish series (vote on Facebook for the next showing) followed by Fellini’s La Dolce Vita on June 29. Admission is free and movies are followed by an afterparty.

Cinema night at Phil’s

The Backyard

The “Backyard” of Holešovice cafe Phil’s Corner regularly hosts live music and events and, as of last summer, a popular outdoor cinema. From today (June 22) it is screening the Bruce Brown surf film The Endless Summer, stay tuned to its Facebook page for details of upcoming Thursday showings—beer and hot dogs are also on the program!
