After the Czech Republic reported a month-long high of 111 new coronavirus cases on Monday, the number of new confirmed cases dipped to 61 on Tuesday, according to data released by the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

The new reported cases on Monday and Tuesday both reflect a high number of new COVID-19 cases discovered at the Darkov coal mine in Karviná yesterday, where 82 employees were discovered to have the coronavirus infection after blanket testing on 900 employees over the past two days. About 300 tests still had to be processed.

By Wednesday morning, the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections at the Darkov mine has increased to 113, along with six family members.

A total of 8,647 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the Czech Republic since the beginning of the epidemic in March.

An additional two COVID-19-related deaths were reported yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths attributed to coronavirus in the Czech Republic to 302.

The number of recoveries has stood at 5,726 according to the Health Ministry’s latest data, meaning the number of current COVID-19 infections in the Czech Republic currently known is now 2,619.

The number of current known COVID-19 infections in the Czech Republic has been dropping steadily after reaching a high of 4,800 in mid-April.

The 111 new coronavirus cases reported Monday were the highest number of new daily cases since April 21.

However, considering the large proportion of them being reported at a single location, the coal mine in Karviná, the number is not considered representative of the overall development of COVID-19 infections in the Czech Republic.

The total number of tests conducted in the Czech Republic on Tuesday will be published by the Czech Health Ministry later this morning.

Across the Czech Republic, Prague has the highest total of known coronavirus infections at 1,996, as well as the highest percentage compared to the population, at 153 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.
