Old Town Square to Project Czech Hockey

The Czech Republic narrowly defeated Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon in their last preliminary game at the 2016 IIHF Hockey World Championships. The final in Moscow was 5-4.

With the victory, the Czech team advances to a quarterfinal game against USA on Thursday, May 19.

On Tuesday morning, Prague City Hall announced some good news: future Czech games will be projected on two large screens in the city’s historic Old Town Square.

But there’s one catch: the team must defeat USA on Thursday and advance to the semi-finals for the remaining games to projected.

Should the Czechs top team USA, a large stage and dual projection screens will be installed in Old Town Square for the remaining semi-finals and bronze & gold-medal games.

“Fans can therefore look forward to supporting their team in masses and I believe we will all support them all the way to the finals.”

The public projection is not unusual. Last year, thousands of fans flocked to Old Town Square to witness the Czech Republic lose a semi-final game against Canada and the bronze medal game against USA.

With 5 wins, 1 overtime win, and 1 overtime loss, the Czech Republic led the Group A division this year with a total of 18 points.

In group B, Canada and Finland both have 6 wins in 6 games to lead the division. They’ll face off against each other later tonight.
