Pack your bags: Regiojet to launch affordable train to Budapest this summer

Private Czech train carrier Regiojet will introduce a train to Budapest this summer, according to the company’s spokesman Aleš Ondrůj.

The new connection to Budapest will run on the existing train line from Prague to Brno to Vienna, and will offer Czechs another affordable option to travel to Hungary. After the stop in Vienna, the train will continue on to Budapest, Hungary. The train will start connections to Budapest on July 31.

The news comes on the heels of Regiojet’s recent launch of overnight trains to Croatia, which have been so popular that many trains sold out.

It will take six hours and 46 minutes to get to Budapest’s Kelenföld Station. The train will also stop in Hegyeshalom as well as Hungarian spas Mosonmagyarovar and Györ.

The train will arrive in Budapest after noon and again after 10 p.m.; it will leave back to Prague at 5:45 a.m. and 12:25 p.m.

Standard tickets on the Regiojet train will start at 539 Crowns, a comparable price to the Czech Railways train. However, a lower class ticket will cost just 399 Crowns until the price is sold out. It’s a much cheaper option than the Austrian railways tickets from Vienna to Budapest, which cost between 240 to 360 Crowns.

“As on other lines, the prices are set so that the operation of trains is profitable,” spokesman Ondrůj said.

The carrier can afford to offer low-cost options because of the popularity of their trains, he told iDnes.
