Pop-up beer garden and social space opening in Prague’s Savarin Palace

The courtyard of Savarin Palace on Na Příkopě will open June 10 as a temporary open-air social place and beer garden.

The organizers, a group called Dejsiprostor, seek to create a calm oasis in the city center.

“Discover the unique space we created a few steps from Wenceslas Square. In Zahrada Savarin (Savarin Garden) you will find great food, great drinks, cold beer and, most importantly, a unique atmosphere. Come and experience something unseen, which will disappear again in a few months,” the organizers said on Facebook.

The added that they were inspired by the idea of foreign “ruin pubs” and they wanted to bring one to Prague’s center. Ruin pubs refers to bars set up in old, dilapidated buildings. The idea first took off in Budapest.

“You will not find white tablecloths with us, but you will find original decorations and an authentic experience. We are preparing various events, you will hear fresh DJ sets from Prague residents and we are planning much more until the autumn. In short … stop working and come with a group or colleagues to eat, drink and meet,” they added.

The space will open to the public for the first time at noon on June 10, and from 6 pm to 10 pm there will be an electroswing DJ. A private opening for partners was held June 5.

The project is limited to just the summer months because Savarin Palace, also called Palác Sylva-Taroucca, is undergoing a large renovation. Work has not yet come to the courtyard space, but after the summer ends it will be completely rebuilt into part of the planned multipurpose project for the palace.

“In the Savarin Garden, we have creates a cozy and safe place where, even in uncertain times after a coronavirus pandemic, you can have an excellent beer, sate yourself with quality food and experience relaxing summer evenings with live street music. We are planning dance evenings and other free cultural events,” Dejsiprostor project manager Filip Adámek said.

“Until now, Na Příkopě has been crowded with tourists. Now we want to show the people of Prague that locals in particular have their place here. The genius loci of this site is so strong that we just didn’t want to let it be,” he added.

The outdoor space will have several stalls, with the food and drink companies Meat Beer, Vinohradský Pivovar, Sushi v Dushi and K8 Cafe participating.

Dejsiprostor concept manager Filip Žilka said that the project has been planned at a very low cost. “We are convinced that the result of our work and the joy of visitors will be all the more authentic,” he said, thanking real estate developer Crestyl for the opportunity. “They have given us a treasure in the center of Prague and we will take care of it with passion for a limited time,” he said.

Savarin Palace, also called Palác Sylva-Taroucca, dates to 1752 and was originally designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and Anselmo Lurago.

Crestyl is in the process of converting the Baroque Palác Savarin and adjacent buildings into a multipurpose complex. Work should be completed in 2022, and the overall cost was estimated at 10 billion CZK.

A Time Out Market was previously announced as one of the main culinary tenants. Aside from the palace, the complex will include a renovated former riding school and public space with a park.
