Prague 1 to Ban Sale of Alcohol after 22:00?

A new initiative seeks to forbid convenience stores from selling late-night booze in the center of Prague

After most of the pubs and bars in central Prague have closed, some drinkers might be encouraged to keep the party going by getting a final round or two from a 24-hour convenient store.

If you live or work in the center of the city, it’s not uncommon to see a stag group or other revellers still at it on the streets in the early hours of the morning. Even in locations where it is forbidden to drink alcohol in public at any time.

But a new initiative by the City of Prague 1 hopes to change that, according to Česká televize.

The city aims to negotiate with late-night markets to restrict the sale of alcohol after 22:00. Bars, pubs, and restaurants would be unaffected.

For now, the city plans to accomplish this by altering the lease agreements through which the stores, of which there are dozens in Prague 1, operate.

Any new store will have a condition in their lease that forbids them from selling alcohol after 22:00, according to Prague 1 councillor Ivan Solil.

While this is only a temporary solution, the ultimate goal is to introduce legislation that will limit the sale of alcohol in central Prague during late hours.

Similar measures are also in the works in Prague 2 and also include some bars and clubs, though the district has proposed only certain streets and after 23:00.
