Prague has jumped thirteen spots in the 2017 Quacquarelli Symond Best Student Cities index, an annually released poll that showcases the best urban destinations for international students based on five categories: university rankings, student mix, desirability, employer activity, and affordability.

According to the index, released this month, “The Czech capital boasts three universities ranked among the world’s best. Its leading institution, Charles University, the Czech Technical University in Prague, and the University of Economics, Prague.”

While the survey indicates that Prague continues to “establish itself as an international study destination,” QS deemed the Czech capital a “staple in the list of top European city-break destinations, thanks to its striking castle, UNESCO-listed medieval Old Town, and thriving arts, museums and nightlife.”

Prague ranked no. 26 overall out of one hundred cities; the city’s large and internationally diverse student community gave it a strong score in the Student Mix category of the index.

It also ranked in the top 50 for affordability; while international tuition fees are in the mid-range, Prague is a less expensive place to live than many of the other entrants in the index.

Prague achieved its strongest score in the new Student View indicator – coming second behind Ottawa.

When asked to name the best things about studying in Prague, one student said: “It’s very affordable and comfortable to live in. Great cuisine.”

Another highlighted the “friendly atmosphere and great nightlife.”

The top 3 cities for 2017 were, respectively, Montreal, Paris, and London.
