From tomorrow, pubs and restaurants will resume operations following the coronavirus restrictions. Those thirsty for a draft beer have been able to satisfy their craving for liquid gold at beer gardens or unique businesses like beer drive-thrus and other delivery services that sprung up throughout the Czech Republic during lockdown.

In an effort to get people back to the pubs, as well as celebrate the general re-opening of a Czech cultural institution, several local establishments have been or will now be offering guests a complimentary pint.

Tomorrow marks the kick off of Pilsner Urquell’s “The first beer is on us” promotion which gives every customer who orders a beer at participating pubs where Pilsner Urquell is served on draft, another beer on the brewery’s tab.

A brewery spokesperson says it wants to thank regulars for their loyalty and support pubs in their restart by pouring a total of one million beers for beer lovers throughout the Czech and Slovak Republics.

“From May 25, the pubs will once again be filled with bustle and the clinking of pints. We decided to celebrate this moment with the biggest event in the history of the brewery and to invite all our faithful regulars to one party,” says Pilsner Urquell marketing manager Eva Andrejčáková.

“We also want to thank them for responsible behavior in times of crisis and at the same time send a call to return to normal life, which includes sitting with friends in a popular pub or restaurant.”

Pivovar Národní which opened its 400-meter-squared beer garden on May 11 in the courtyard of a Baroque monastery has launched a similar promotion. It will reopen its interior on May 25.

“We are looking forward to seeing you in our brewery and it must be celebrated,” the brewery wrote on its website saying that it will be giving  guests every fourth pint of its Czech Lion brew free of charge and through the end of September.

The impact of the coronavirus on the Czech brewing industry has been far reaching. Average sales of tank beer saw a decrease accompanied by widespread slow-down of production. During the crisis a 24% drop in overall Czech alcohol consumption was indicated due to the lack of tourists.

Closured haves left pubs and restaurants with thousands of hectoliters of beer sitting in kegs and tanks. Many thousands more hectoliters remain in warehouses, as breweries have no customers to ship the beer to, and have have had to be disposed of.

Czech-Moravian Association of Mini-Breweries (ČMSMP) president Jan Šuráň predicted that 25% of the roughly 500 Czech mini-breweries will close or be sold by their owners due to losses from the coronavirus crisis.
