More than a week after the devastating tornado that ravaged South Moravia, a heartwarming story was reported in Moravská Nová Ves on Saturday as volunteers from Prague's firefighting corps managed to save a dog trapped beneath the rubble of a fallen house.
According to information later shared by the firefighters, the dog had been trapped beneath the rubble for about a day after crawling inside the remains of a destroyed family home.
"We saved a dog's life in Moravská Nová Ves," Prague firefighters tweeted through their official handle on Saturday afternoon. The town was among those most affected by last week's tornado strike.
"We dug a dog out of the rubble of the house - injured and exhausted, we handed it over to veterinarians."
Firefighters from Prague assisting in rescue and cleanup efforts in South Moravia after the deadly tornado first noticed the dog when they heard barking coming from one of the fallen houses. The firefighters identified that a dog was trapped beneath the rubble, and coordinated a rescue operation.
At first, it was thought that the dog had been trapped beneath the rubble since the tornado strike last Thursday.
Shortly after, firefighters shared a small update estimating that the dog had been trapped beneath the rubble for a day after crawling inside a heavily damaged home.
"The dog was under the ruins for about a day, he climbed in a destroyed house and yesterday he was covered in part of the rubble," they later added.
The dog was most likely a schnauzer, according to a spokesperson from the South Moravian fire brigade. He was injured and exhausted but in stable condition after being treated on the spot.
Veterinarians in South Moravia have treated dozens of animals, especially dogs and cats, with injuries related to last week's tornado strike. According to information provided by locals, one dog was killed during the storm.
