As extreme rainfall descends upon Prague in the coming days, many events across the city have been canceled or postponed, including the farmer’s markets on the Rašín embankment and the annual popular Americká Street block party. However, there’s still ample opportunity to get out and about this weekend without getting wet.

SECRET SHELTERS

Locations of historic significance will be opening their doors, including the nuclear fallout shelter, Folimanka. On one Saturday a month, uncommented public tours take place inside the largest underground construction in Prague 2, which can hold up to 1300 people. Entry is free of charge and staff at the main entrance can answer your questions in Czech, English, and Russian.

The jubilee 10th year of the Open City Hall event will bring musical entertainment and playful tours to Prague’s Old Town Hall, founded in 1338. The 20th-century sewage chamber below its surface, named the Foreigner’s Entrance, will also be open to the general public. On Sept. 15, learn about the little-known secrets of Old Town Hall—beyond just the famed Astronomical Clock.

In the three-story Palace of Hrzan de Harasov, where writer Franz Kafka’s parents once sold textiles, a new contemporary art gallery and design shop has opened under the management of the Central Gallery on Old Town Square. C12 Gallery & Design Store will present a new selected artist every three months, with the first exhibition entitled Reflections of Records by Adéla Kostkanová. Vases, books, jewelry and porcelain will be available to purchase.

Three villas in Bubeneč will be connected for a day on Sept. 14 for the TRIANGL festival, which will take place on Pelléova street. Villa Lanna, the Museum of Literature and Villa Pellé will be linked together for a stacked program on science, education, literature, and visual arts - including an exhibition on “The Plays of Franz Kafka”. Musical performances and tours will be running all day, complemented by refreshments. Entrance to the festival is free and suitable for children.

REELS AND REVELRIES

Rainy weather calls for cozy movie-binging, and luckily, there is not only a newly-released film to devour but a program of English-friendly films in a gorgeous setting to discover. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the follow-up to Tim Burton’s dark-fantasy-slash-comedy film from 1988. It will be showing across the weekend at Lucerna Passage, Cinema City, and other locations around Prague.

A series of English-subtitled foreign films will be playing across the weekend at Kino35, the cinema of the French Institute in Prague. Catch the critically acclaimed French film Daaaaaali or the Swedish masterpiece Hypnosis.

PICTURESQUE PIZZERIA

Shelter from the storms and enjoy scenic views of rain splashing onto the Vltava next to the Charles Bridge at the newly opened Amunì pizzeria. The self-proclaimed ‘first gourmet pizzeria in Prague’ already had a branch in Vinohrady and is now offering its subversive toppings such as fig mustard, raw ham, mashed peas, and more in a new location. Top it off with some of their lip-smackingly good gelato.

TALES AS OLD AS TIME

Enjoy the timeless story of a girl who falls in love with a monster at the National Theatre production of The Beauty and the Beast. Though the play will be performed in Czech, English surtitles will be displayed. Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing will also be performed at the National Theatre across the weekend. Follow up your theatrical outing by dashing into the newly opened Forbina Bar across the road, which serves up literary- and drama-inspired cocktails.

British artist Antony Gormley and Czech architect and poet Pavla Melková’s sensory-simulating installations and sculptures are now on display at the Rudolfinum. The exhibition Antony Gormley / Pavla Melková aims to enhance viewers’ awareness of the spaces they inhabit and how they interact with objects and the world around them. The exhibit will run until January 5, 2025.

Global fashion talent will be showcased in Prague from Sept. 13 to 14 at Port7, with one-day or two-day passes to We’re Next 2024 granting access to fashion shows by local and foreign designers. Contemporary art will be displayed in collaboration with Czech Design Week, and after parties with designers and DJs will be accessible to VIP patrons.

The fourth annual GHMP book fair will take place at the Troja Château on Sept. 14 and 15, showcasing the work of galleries, art schools, magazines, publishing houses, fanzine creators, and more. Entrance is free and grants access to a host of products up for sale in the gorgeous interior of the château.

FURRY FRIENDS

Rain, hail, or shine, the Dogs & Friends pop-up at Holešovice Market on Sept. 14 will not be deterred by the weather conditions, moving furry friends to Hall 13. Meet French bulldogs, border collies, greyhounds, dachshunds, and more, and satisfy your taste buds at the Food Truck Point for tasty (human) treats. Accessories and fashion for your pets will also be on sale.
