Rare Unpublished Early Photos of Prague Now on Display

A new exhibition in Prague Jindřišská Tower features early photos of the Czech capital and its colorful inhabitants

Mr. Černý the baker, Mr. Štěrba the chestnut vendor, Karel filling his pitcher at the brewery, Ms. Košeráková selling her porcelain wares, tennis players at Letná – the lives of a number of colorful individuals come together to create one fascinating photo exhibit from a time when photography was a relatively novel phenomenon.

The newly opened exhibition Nostalgic Prague showcases photos of the Czech capital from the 19th and early 20th centuries in the Jindřišská Tower, a Prague city landmark known for its medieval belfry.

Organized by photographer David Černý, founder of the website Miluju Praha and historical photo bank, Historicke-foto.cz, the exposition on the top floor of the tower is divided into three topical parts according to views from the tower, says Černý.

Rare Unpublished Early Photos of Prague Now on Display

“You will see the Old Town and the magnificent view of the Prague Castle panorama. Photos from the Prague outskirts are to be found near the window which offers contemporary views of Karlín, Holešovice, and Libeň. [Images of] Prague transport from the turn of 20th century can be seen in the spot with a real view of the Fanta building of the Prague main railway station in the background.”

Contemporary snapshots of Prague towers and spires are on displayed on the sixth floor allowing visitors to easily compare how they skyline has evolved over the past century; large-format photographs printed on balloon materials are exhibited along the staircase.

Photos of various Prague quarters with scenes from everyday life are sure to be among the most popular; gaze upon the faces of Prague denizens and tradespeople for a visual retelling of a time when, “Places like the notorious Jedová chýše (Poison Hut) pub hosted gangsters and served soup right into dimples in tables,” says Černý.

The exhibit runs through August 20, 2017.
