Samuel L. Jackson tries cursing in Czech to help get out the vote in the US

American actor Samuel L. Jackson promised to teach people to curse in 15 languages if a minimum number made a solid commitment to vote in the upcoming US presidential elections in November.

Thousands of people responded, and Jackson kept his word. The video, which he posted to Twitter, shows Jackson attempting to say the rude phrase “Jdi do prdele” at the 1:15 mark in the video. He struggles with the Slavic consonant clusters and the result sounds more like an exclamation in a samurai movie than proper street Czech. But he gets points for trying the notoriously hard language.

Jackson didn’t take the easy way out. The 15 languages included in the two-minute video were diverse and sometimes difficult: Basque, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Swahili, Nepali, Jamaican patois, Icelandic, Maori, Haitian, Bemba, Czech, Esperanto, Catalan, Brazilian Portuguese and Thai.

After finishing the list, he urges US voters to take further action. “Pass this on. Make sure you get other people to register to vote. And make sure you go out and vote too,” Jackson said at the end of the video.

“Listen up – If 2500 of you click a voting action below to make sure you’re #GoodToVote, I will teach you to swear in 15 different languages. Go to http://headcount.org/samjackson now!” he tweeted. The video in the challenge tweet has had over 180,000 views.

Jackson did not disclose how many of his Twitter followers went to the link, but it was clearly more than he expected.

The 15 -language video was originally posted on Twitter, where it has 685,000 views. “You guys showed up and blasted through our Voter Action Goal for #GoodToVote! In the video, Jackson can be seen wearing T-shirt with the slogan ‘Your Voice Matters” and baseball cap with the word ‘Freedom.” He also has on a face covering with the word “Vote” in large capital letters.

The video has also been copied to gossip site TMZ and other outlets, so a full count of how many people now know how to mispronounce a rude Czech phrase is hard to determine.

Jackson in the video does not endorse a specific candidate for the November 3 election in the US. Incumbent President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence (Republican) are being challenged by former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris (Democrat). There are also races for congressional seats and other positions.

In the 2016 presidential election, voter turnout was 55.5%, and it has not been over 60% since 1968. The highest turnout was in 1876, with 81.8% of eligible voters.
