Tourists heading to Prague will receive vouchers for their stays starting in July, in accordance with a new plan approved by Prague councilors this week.

The program, aimed at Czech and domestic tourists, will provide a voucher for every visitor who spends at least one night at a Prague-area hotel, according to a report in Ceske Noviny. The voucher will let visitors use the points for visits to cultural institutions, like the zoo, the biological garden, local museums, and more. Officials hope to also include state institutions in the system, such as the Prague Castle. The program starts July 1.

“The project is designed to restart tourism. It is now aimed at domestic tourists. Of course, depending on the development of the situation, we will possibly expand the program to countries from which people will be able to arrive,” said Prague Councilor Hana Třeštíková told Ceske Noviny.

In the summer, Prague normally sees an influx of tourists; however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, experts expect to lose nearly 100 billion crowns in tourism revenue. Prague city officials are spending more than 121 million crowns from the city budget on the program, meant to restart tourism at home. Of that total, 70 million crowns will directly support the vouchers themselves and 15 million crowns will go towards the domestic campaign to draw in visitors.

Once the voucher program starts, Prague officials plan to monitor it and adjust as needed. Many establishments in Prague are already receiving support from the government: the city postponed rent payments for entrepreneurs and waived penalties for late payments.

The program will run from July 1 to September 30. Further details on how to receive a voucher will be released at a later date.
