Over the course of 2015’s summer months, photographer Rishabh Kaul captured Prague’s most popular swimming arena – the Podolí Swimming Pool – in a gorgeous series of black & white photos for Prague Quadrennial.
As the summer sun sets in Prague and winter begins to rear its head, we though it appropriate to take a look back at this series of striking, and strangely nostalgic, photos.
Rishabh shared with us the background of the project:
“Earlier this year I was commissioned to document the Podoli Swimming Pool in Prague for the Prague Quadrennial 2015. I was both excited and petrified – you feel more naked as the only clothed being in a sea of nudity. Pervert-accusing glances aside, it took me over two months to do the job.
“It slowly became clear that swimming is just a small part of what really goes on here. It’s more of a social ecosystem where daily stories play out on a wet stage. Athletes, sun-bathers, social butterflies, lovers, loners, friends, families – all gather in this public space with different agendas and release a lightness of being that is so quintessentially Czech.”
