Summer is all about ease of living, which means naked, sun-touched skin, beach-swept hair, and less time spent at the mirror. The playful beauty trends here, spotted by Prague-based make-up-artist-to-the-stars Lucie Langerová, shouldn´t be worn all at once. Combine trendy high-voltage hues with mere traces of cheek color to make your favorite feature pop.
Bold corals, fuschia, and fire-engine red lit up the runaways this spring, but soda-pop orange got the most lip service. How to wear “the new red” without looking clownish? Says Langerová:
Chose the right shade, something that complements your undertones
Buy a cheap orange lipstick and mix with a bit of your favorite, fool-proof color
Matte textures are best for orange lip color
Keep the rest of your makeup neutral for maximum impact
Try: M.A.C. Morange or L’Oreal Rouge Virtual with Body Shop´s Beech
Expect a surplus of sparkles to show up this summer. Apply a little or lot to eyes, cheeks, or nails for Ziggy Stardust-era glam, but avoid disco overkill by keeping these tips in mind, Langerová says:
Apply glitter to just one area of your face (eyes, cheeks, or middle of lips) for a subtle shimmer
Use a product with small glitter particles or dilute glitter by blending with other products
For nails, go with a sparkly nail polish with a clear base as a top coat
Sticky tape works well for removing excess glitter
Try: Too Faced Glamour Dust in Glampire on face, O.P.I Glitzerland for nails
Ultra-vibrant shadows in electric blue, lilac, sunny yellow, and—the hit of the season—green, can be worn soft, edgy, or bold, depending on your personal style, says Langerová:
Soft: Dust green shadow on the outer corners of eyes; accent lids with a light, shimmery shadow
Bold: Liberally apply green to lids followed by a black shadow on the lash line and blend upward
Edgy: Apply all-over shadow from lash to brow
Simply lining your bottom lid with a green liner will also give you a subtle hint of tint
Try: Clinique Color Surge Eye Shadow Soft Shimmer in Juniper, Max Factor Color Effects Dip-in Eyeshadow in Party Lime, or Sephora #44 Long-Lasting Eyeshadow in Picnic in the Park
Bronze, beautiful (not orange!) skin is always the best summer look, says Langerová. Shoot for a peachy or light rust-brown finish, depending on your skin tone. Langerová also says:
Begin by smoothing on a primer to avoid fading color
For subtle shimmer, swipe a white-gold pigment powder over creamy peach blush
For a bolder bronze chose a product with a bit of golden shimmer—not an orange base!
Instead of brushing on bronze, use your fingertips to dab on eyes, cheeks, and lips
Try: Dermacol Perfect Base Cream (for under make-up), Benefit Girl Meats Pearl Liquid Pearl for Face, Rimmel All Natural Bronzer
Last year´s unruly, untouched brows are out. But a full brow, albeit a groomed one, is still a style win. Embrace your natural brows says Langerová, but keep these grooming tips in mind:
Shape up eyebrows by brushing with a clean toothbrush or mascara wand
A dot of foundation or powder (a shade lighter than your skin) on the brow bone creates lift
Use brow powder or pencil, the same shade or a shade dark than your hair, to define arch
Smooth some petroleum jelly or clear gloss over bushy brows for a polished look
Try: Illuminating Powder by Fred Farrugia on brow bone, Yves Rocher Eyebrow Pencil with built-in precision brush on brows.
