Czechia will not get any respite from the heat this week as daytime temperatures are set to soar to above 30 degrees Celsius in the capital and across the country almost every day this week. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMÚ) has issued an excessive heat warning for Prague and Central Bohemia for the first half of this week, reminding people of the importance of remaining cool during the hot weather.

Every day around 30 degrees in Prague

The capital will see the warmest day of the week today, as temperatures are expected to peak at about 33 degrees Celsius. Later on, temperatures will hover at around 30 degrees Celsius, with each day having high levels of sun. Tuesday may see a risk of thunderstorms in the capital and east of the country, according to the CHMÚ.

TIPS FOR STAYING COOL IN PRAGUE:

  • Trams with a yellow bumper (or “nose”) in the capital have air-conditioning
  • The PID Lítačka application or web app shows which trams and buses have air-conditioning
  • New public transport signs also display whether a tram is air-conditioned
  • Prague Fountains provides a comprehensive overview of the city’s fountains and misting spots

Thursday through Saturday will see temperatures hover at 30 to 31 degrees Celsius, with dry and sunny weather expected. Sunday will see a peak in temperatures in the capital, rising to 34 degrees.

Other regions also affected

Over in Brno, every day this week (apart from Wednesday) will see temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius. Ostrava will see marginally cool weather, although the “coldest” maximum daytime temperature that Czechia’s third-largest city will register this week will be 28 degrees Celsius.

In the first half of this week, the Olomouc region will see the highest temperatures nationwide, reaching 34 degrees on Tuesday afternoon.

The CHMÚ warns of the danger of overheating and dehydration, recommending people consume mainly unsweetened soft drinks in combination with high amounts of mineral water. It recommends limiting physical activity in the midday and afternoon hours.

Meteorologists also warn boaters, fishermen, and rowers of elevated river levels after recent heavy rain, although the situation is stabilizing.
