The Colours of Ostrava Music Festival Kicks Off Today

The Czech Republic’s most highly attended music festival, held in the awe-inspiring Dolní Vítkovice ironworks, starts today

The 17th Colours of Ostrava multi-genre music festival kicks off today. From July 18-21, the awe-inspiring Dolní Vítkovice ironworks (built in 1830 and then restored in 2009) will host over 350 performances on twenty-one open and covered stage with concerts, discussions, theatre, films, workshops as well as artistic activities scheduled across four days.

This year’s Colours of Ostrava headliners include N*E*R*D, Jessie J, London Grammar, Kygo, Joss Stone, Ziggy Marley, Paul Kalkbrenner, Gus Gus, Mura Masa, and many more.

The programme effortlessly combines the well-known with the up and coming. Take for example Jakarta Record’s Mura Masa. The Guernsey-born, electronic music producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has taken the scene by storm with this self-entitled 2017 project and visuals that excited music lovers and YouTube viewers alike receiving over 42 million views.

The 2018 Colours line-up continues the sixteen-year-long tradition of offering an eclectic selection of both contemporary and classical performers from around the world from electro beats to jazzy breaks, modern-classical to reggae bass.

It’s not just the quality programme that has made Colours of Ostrava the Czech Republic’s highest attended music festival. The lofty ironwork setting provides a truly unique backdrop for the expected 40,000 visitors to enjoy the summer days of genre-less fun. “We present some incredibly cool bands while retaining a really laid-back and friendly approach.” Said Colours spokesperson, Shelly Bonet, speaking on the festival’s ongoing popularity and longevity.

This year the festvial is offering its “Luxury Tents” service. Sleeping up to five, the luxury tents will be located approximately 100 metres from the festival’s main entrance aptly named “Chill Village”. Prices & further information can be found on the Colours website.

In true all-inclusive spirit, the festival encourages visitors to take time out and visit some of the many interesting places in and around the city of Ostrava. The area is rich in history and culture with a number of supporting events happening in various locations around the city over the next few days. The festival is incredibly family-friendly and features a great children’s stage with child supervision on hand should you require. There’s a breastfeeding area for mothers and babies wanting to dip out of the action for some quiet down-time. The Colours Without Barriers initiative continues to provide services and stands for those who desire assistance (special grandstands and/or the option of booking a trained assistant free of charge) to mobility-impaired visitors.
