The twelfth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness has once again ranked the Czech Republic as one of the most peaceful countries in the world.

The GPI covers 99.7% of the world’s population, using twenty-three qualitative and quantitative indicators to measure the state of peace using three thematic domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.

Europe, the world’s most peaceful region, recorded a deterioration for the third straight year. It deteriorated across all three GPI domains and eleven indicators, most notably on the intensity of internal conflict and relations with neighboring countries

The Czech Republic scored 1.381 on the index, coming in just behind Canada and above Singapore (Iceland ranks as the world’s most peaceful country followed by New Zealand, Austria, Portugal, and Denmark rounding out the top five).

In Europe, the Czech Republic scored as the fifth most peaceful country on the continent behind Denmark.

According to the think tank behind the survey, the world is less peaceful than at any other time in the past decade.
