Prague, Nov 20 (CTK) – The mortality rate dropped by more than 13 percent in the Czech Republic over the past ten years, people die at a higher age, and cardiovascular diseases and cancer continue to be the most frequent causes of death, Terezie Styglerova, from the Czech Statistical Office (CSU), said today.

She told a press conference that the three most frequent causes of death are the same for men and women, but that men die in accidents more often than women, while women more often than men die of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia and diabetes.

In 2009-2018, the death rate of men and women decreased by 13 and 14 percent, respectively.

In 2009, 1752 men and 1155 women died per 100,000 inhabitants, while last year it was 1519 men and 993 women.

The CSU data show that the mortality dropped mainly thanks to a lower number of deaths caused by heart diseases, malignant tumours and cerebrovascular diseases.

In 2018, 112,920 people died in the Czech Republic with 10.5 million inhabitants.

Nearly one third of them died of cardiovascular diseases, especially the ischemic heart disease and heart failure, and one fourth of them of malignant tumors, especially lung, colorectal and pancreatic cancer as well as prostate cancer for men and breast cancer for women. The third most common cause of death in 2018 were cerebrovascular diseases.

The CSU data also show that people live longer than they lived ten years ago.

“Deaths gradually concentrate to a higher and higher age. Women have lower mortality in middle and higher age, their deaths concentrate to the highest age around 85 years,” Styglerova said.

Marketa Safusova, from the CSU, said people most often die in winter and March and the least often from May to September.
