The Theme of Prague Pride 2018 Is Family

By choosing the family as its theme, organizers will try to underline the fact that for LGBT people being accepted at home is more important than the way they are treated by people outside the family. Unfortunately, gay kids are often singled out and made the black sheep of the family.

“In this year’s campaign, we are raising awareness about labeling people, which takes place in most families. Relatives often attach labels to other family members based on their behavior or inborn characteristics – whether they like it or not. It is simply our habit to give labels,” says Hana Kulhankova, Prague Pride director.

More than 100 different events comprise the program of the 2018 festival.

Transgender model Loiza Lamers from the Netherlands, who was able to come out early as a child thanks to her family’s support, will appear. Swiss historian Corinne Rufli takes a look at the lives of lesbian seniors, and attendees will learn little-known facts about the family of the German writer Thomas Mann through an exhibition and a theatre performance. In the Pride Village on the Strelecky Island, an entire day will be devoted to marriage and family.

The family will also be at the center of a series of workshop and support groups including a discussion with children growing up in rainbow families, a coming out preparation workshop run by Safety Hotline (Linka bezpečí), and group meetings of LGBT relatives organized by the Trans*parent organization. 

The festival begins as usual with the opening concert in the Pride Village on Strelecky Island, Monday, August 6. Scheduled to perform are Mucha band, MTV The Real World star Davis Mallory from the U.S., and the highlight of the evening will be a show by the Czech pop singer Petr Kotvald.

The Pride Parade will take place on Saturday, August 11 but due to reconstruction work in the lower part of Wenceslas Square will go from the St. Wenceslas statue along Opletalova street to Hybernska street and from there back to the old route: Náměstí Republiky – Revoluční – Dvořákovo nábřeží – Čechův most – Letna steps.

Most of the Prague Pride events are admission-free.
